The CRPF, which assists state governments in the maintenance of law & order and performs various internal security duties has been given Rs 12,236 crore in 2014-15. The specialised force NSG has been given Rs 639 crore, while the domestic spy agency, Intelligence Bureau, received Rs 1,196 crore.
The BSF has been given Rs 11,221 crore for the next fiscal, while ITBP received Rs 3,077 crore. The CISF has been allocated Rs 4,727 crore. Anti terror agency, NIA has received an allocation of Rs 101 crore. SSB, which protects the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders has been given Rs 3,062 crore. Assam Rifles, the oldest Paramilitary of the country, has been allocated Rs 3,580 crore.
Chidambaram also announced Rs 52 crore under ‘other police expenses’ which will also support in raising a Tear Smoke Unit under Border Security Force. Rs 789 crore has been earmarked for security-related expenses and Rs 600 crore for modernisation of police forces.
The government has also introduced a centrally sponsored ‘National Scheme for Modernisation of Police and other Forces’ with a budget of Rs 2,616 crore, which subsumes existing CSS for expenditure relating to purchase of sophisticated equipment, development of special infrastructure in extremist affected areas, revamping of civil defence and other disaster management projects.
