SHILLONG: With the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) is intensifying vigil along the 1,880-km-long Indo-Bangla border in the NE to check infiltration and cross-border crimes.

Inspector General of Meghalaya Frontier of Border Security Force (BSF) Anil Kumar said, "The BGB has agreed to intensify coordinated patrolling along the border ahead of the Lok Sabha election in Meghalaya, Assam and in the entire stretch of the border. We had intensified patrolling and also pushed more forces to the border during the general elections in Bangladesh recently. We expect that they do the same during elections in our country."

The matter was taken up during the three-day Inspector Generals-Regional Commanders' conference of the two border guarding forces held at the Frontier Headquarters here recently. BSFchiefs of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura Frontiers attended the conference.

On the other hand, Meghalaya chief election officer P Naik said the BSF has been asked to keep vigil along the border in Meghalaya to prevent attempts by anti-national elements from sneaking into the country and disrupt the poll process.

India and Bangladesh share a 1,880 km-long International border that stretches from Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram up to Tripura. The Election Commission is conducting elections to 24 Lok Sabha seats in the seven states of the northeast next month.

Assam has the maximum number of seats (14), followed by Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh with two seats each. Mizoram and Nagaland have one seat each.

On the other hand, the Meghalaya government has asked militant outfits active in the Garo Hills region to come forward for talks. "An open offer was made through the governor's address to all militant outfits operating in the state to shun the path of violence and engage in a dialogue with the government," home minister Roshan Warjri informed the state assembly during the ongoing budget session here.
