Victims of political torture, three Hindu families from Bangladesh were compelled to cross the border into India and take refuge at a BSF outpost. The victims said they were tortured as they refused to vote for BNP. The eight individuals from the Gareya Gopalpur and Arjipur villages of Bangladesh’s Thakurgaon district were found loitering aimlessly by the BSF on Wednesday at the Indo-Bangladesh border in Manikganj, Jalpaguri district.
The personnel offered them food and accommodation while BSF sources said the matter is being discussed with Bangladesh. The BSF is looking to send the eight back to their native places after holding a flag meeting with Bangladesh.
One of the immigrants named Ujani Rani said BNP supporters forcibly confined them inside a school building when they were about to vote. The party cadres also torched their homes, physically assaulted them and also tried to set them on fire, but they managed to escape.
Eighth standard student Radha Rani said she was forced to discontinue school as BNP supporters regularly harassed her on the way. The others, namely Bhikshuk Srimanta, Goshai Srimanta, Pramath Barman, Rati Bala, Binapani Barman and Biplab Barman, narrated similar tales of woe. All of them express deep gratitude towards the BSF personnel for their hospitality.
Meanwhile, BSF North Bengal deputy commanding general Nandish Kumar said the eight persons are being allowed to stay at the Manikganj BOP on humanitarian grounds and will be sent back to Bangladesh following the flag meeting. (EOIC)
