By Express News Service New Delhi. The Centre will raise at least 55 additional battalions of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in 2014, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Wednesday.
Aa many as 126 additional battalions were sanctioned by the UPA in 5 Paramilitary Forces, Assam Rifles and NSG, out of which 71 battalions have already been raised. The PM, while inaugurating multi-crore health plans for the CAPF, said the government is looking at strengthening infrastructure and building capacity for the forces deployed in hostile terrain.
The Institute - Central Armed Police Forces Institute of Medical Sciences (CAPFIMS) will be built at a cost of more than `1,350 crore and will include a 500-bed general hospital, a 300-bed Super Specialty Hospital, a Nursing College and a School of Paramedics. It will render treatment to troops and families of forces like the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NSG and Assam Rifles, which function under the command of the Ministry of Home.
The institution, which is expected to come up in the next two years will offer MBBS, PG Degree, PG Diploma, Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery courses and about 200 students are to be admitted per year for these courses. The Institute will also have 60 seats for the Nursing course and around 300 seats for Paramedics.
“The 12th Plan outlay for strengthening infrastructure for the CAPF is more than `12,500 crore. Since the year 2008, 24 new Training Institutes have been sanctioned for these Forces,” the PM said.
The medical cadre of the central forces was revamped in 2004, to provide the basic minimum healthcare facilities to the Forces’ personnel and their families even in remote postings. Six old hospitals were upgraded to 100 bedded Composite Hospitals, and 32 old hospitals to 50 bedded composite hospitals to provide specialty treatment.
