Chinese study centres in Nepal cause of concern: SSB

From ZeeNews March 03, 2014 New Delhi: The SSB, a paramilitary force that guards India's frontier with Nepal, has expressed concern over the emergence of Chinese study centres in the neighbouring country allegedly indulging in anti-India propaganda. Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) chief Arun Chaudhary on Monday shared these concerns with his counterpart in Nepal Police Inspector General (IG) Upendra Kant Aryal who visited the forces' headquarters here as the leader of a delegation for bi-lateral border talks. Chaudhary conveyed to Aryal that the Chinese study centres were sprouting in Nepal fast and these centres were allegedly indulging in anti-India propaganda. The two forces also decided to create a joint task force to address trans-border crimes and the menace of fake Indian currency notes being prevalent in border areas. SSB director general (DG) Chaudhary, an official statement from the paramilitary said, highlighted the plight of FICN giving example how poor labourers were being cheated of reimbursement of their hard work as there were reports that payments were being giving to them in fake notes. Both the sides, during the day-long meeting, decided to strengthen their mechanism to curb smuggling of narcotics and human trafficking. As a goodwill gesture, SSB also mooted a plan to station five ambulances at select locations along Indo-Nepal border which can be availed by the people of both the sides in times of emergency. During the meeting, also attended by the officials of external affairs and internal security departments of the two countries, Nepal police chief Aryal said Nepal shares a relationship of 'beti and roti' with India and hence it was their desire to work together and in close coordination with India. While a number of Nepalese brides get married in Indian families, a number of people from the Himalayan nation have business interests in Indian markets not only along the border areas but also in the hinterland of the country. A full-scale implementation of these measures is expected to take place when an SSB delegation travels to Nepal later this month. SSB guards the 1,751-km long 'open' border with Nepal and it is also the lead intelligence gathering agency in this area. There are over 450 border posts of the paramilitary.

140 companies of CRPF sought for Lok Sabhs polls in Haryana

From The TOI TNN | Mar 6, 2014, CHANDIGARH: The Election Commission would take the help of over 70,000 polling personnel and about 1,300 supervisors to conduct peaceful Lok Sabha polls in Haryana, which goes to polls on April 10. The state has about 1.5 crore voters, who would elect 10 MPs. The EC has sought 140 companies of CRPF this time against 54 companies pressed into service during last parliamentary polls in 2009. Election officials did not cite any specific reason for this increase, but mentioned that states always seek more cops than are allotted to conduct polls. Haryana chief electoral officer Shrikant Walgad said that apart from CRPF, personnel of Haryana police and home guards would also be deputed on poll duty. There would be over 16,000 polling stations in the state. An assistant expenditure observer each would be deputed in all the 90 assembly segments in the state and a general observer would be deputed for each parliamentary constituency. "Flying squads would videograph political functions and rallies. The contesting candidates would have to get each and every content certified before posting it on social media and would also have to give expenditure details incurred on posting such content, which will be added to the expenditure prescribed for contesting elections," he said. Walgad said two awareness observers have been appointed for six parliamentary constituencies -- Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rohtak, Sonipat, Karnal and Ambala -- as voting percentage was less in these constituencies in the past elections. There are 16,129 polling stations in the state. Each polling station would either have a micro observer for supervision or webcasting/videography would be carried out at each station, he said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/140-companies-of-CRPF-sought-for-Lok-Sabhs-polls-in-Haryana/articleshow/31507393.cms

BSF’s highest award for woman doctor

From The Hindu March 7, 2014 Devesh K. Pandey When thousands were rendered homeless and hundreds perished in the devastating floods and landslides triggered by the cloudburst in Uttarakhand last June, there was no lady doctor to attend to women victims. Under the trying circumstances, Dr. P. Hima Bindu from the Border Security Force stepped in. “BSF teams were engaged in rescue and rehabilitation operations since the last week of June. However, there was no lady doctor to attend to women victims of the disaster. I was then told that my services were required in the flood-hit regions of Uttarakhand,” said Dr. Bindu, chief medical officer. In August, Dr. Bindu reported for duty at Kotma village which was then at the centre of about a dozen villages adopted by the BSF for rehabilitation. The medical officer worked round-the-clock, attending to over 1,000 patients in about 45 days. She was recently conferred the BSF’s highest award — Director General’s Commendation Role. “I come from the Andhra Pradesh plains and was not accustomed to hilly terrains. On several occasions, we had to scale difficult routes on foot. At one place, a portion of the road was completely washed out leaving behind a chasm. We somehow crossed over to the other side and reached the villages where our services were required,” said Dr. Bindu. While working in Uttarakhand, she encountered families in Kedarnath which had lost their dear ones in the worst natural calamity. Herself a psychiatrist, Dr. Bindu provided counselling to the families, apart from attending to their physical illnesses. “The locals’ major concern was restoration of the channels of communication, which were also washed out, to Guptkashi, the nearest town. Dr. Bindu was the first lady doctor to reach those villages to serve the women. Even non-government organisations could go only up to Guptkashi as all the approach roads were washed out,” said a senior BSF officer, appreciating Dr. Bindu’s contribution to the rescue and relief work. “I felt special that I got a chance to serve the needy by overcoming adverse conditions, at a time when there was no electricity, nor adequate water supply in those villages,” Dr. Bindu said. http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/bsf-recognises-lady-doctors-service-during-uttarakhand-disaster/article5761385.ece

Congress demands probe into BSF recruitment of April 2012

From ZeeNews March 08, 2014 Jammu: Former minister and senior Congress leader Manjit Singh on Friday demanded probe into recruitment of youth in Border Security Force (BSF) in April 2012 and denial of right to them to join duty. "We demand probe into the recruitment of youth in BSF in the month of April 2012. They were denied right to join duty," Singh told reporters after submitting a memorandum to the District Commissioner (DC) Samba. He said they held protest against the alleged negligence in the recruitment of local youth by the BSF even as they were shortlisted for recruitment over one-and-a-half year ago. Singh alleged that the youth, who were selected in the recruitment, were not allowed to join their duties saying the border guards have recruited more people against the number of vacancies. He sought Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's intervention in the matter. PTI http://zeenews.india.com/news/jammu-and-kashmir/congress-demands-probe-into-bsf-recruitment-of-april-2012_916523.html
